I’ll admit. I’m a frequent Googler. I want to know stuff.
Anything and Everything.
I have a love for learning – it’s a thirst that is never quenched.
A new skill. A new approach. A new word.
All of it.
I want to learn a new language – Spanish – but I think my vocabulary will be limited to the lovely greetings (Hola, Buenos Dias/Nochos) and ordering a Cerveza, and finding a Bano. It’s all good.
I have mass respect for anyone that can learn a new language 4 decades in. It’s hard to do. Our brains were more adept to serve us in this learning quest in our early double-digit years. Not impossible, but much much harder.
It’s true. I learned it.
Beyond the obvious benefit – acquiring knowledge – I’ve discovered five more added bonuses from having a Love of Learning.
You empower yourself.
That feeling you have when you accept and embrace a new challenge. It’s yours. You own it.
You push your fears aside, move past the self-doubt, and double down on your own potential.
For me, I usually go to my Tom Hanks Castaway voice from the scene when he started his first fire,
“Look what I createddddddd”.
I do. Every time.
And it feels pretty awesome.
You save money.
Granted, sometimes it may be better to just throw some money at it for a quick and painless solution. But as the saying goes, “Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, you feed him for his life.”
This is how I feel about learning a new skill. It will take time to learn and many more hours to become proficient (if at all), but the learning journey is worth it when you can finally do it yourself.
I launched my own website, twice. The first one took lots of time and patience, bundled with a ton of coffee, many impromptu vocal bursts of the serenity prayer, and many many many loud and overly dramatic sighs.
But I did it, and I didn’t need to hand that job (or money) over to someone else.
You add a new joy to your life.
When your mind expands, your heart usually follows. That’s how it feels for me anyway. A new hobby, passion or skill awakens my spirit in a joyful way. The more I learn, the more I want to learn. It has that lovely domino effect.
Four years ago I felt like an Imposter. I did something I never thought I would be able to do – I showed up to take a motorcycle safety course. I knew nothing about motorcycles. Nothing. Na-da. Zippo.
It was an intensive two-day course. After 8 hours of learning, I was equal parts exhausted and exhilarated. By day two I couldn’t wait to get back on my bike. I completed my road test, and my Instructor told me he wasn’t worried about me all weekend. Me. Holy heck. Imposter no more. I earned my license. I did it.
Motorcycle riding is one of the biggest joys of my life. I learned something I thought was impossible.
I continue to learn every time I am on my bike. It never stops for me. Grateful for taking a chance. On me.
You inspire others to do the same.
I am inspired when I see someone learn something new. The glow that radiates from their joy fills my space as well. That’s their Love of Learning on full display. It’s inspiring to see someone move forward in their learning quest – not intimidated by the science, the cold, the uncertainty, the struggle. They just figure it out. Because – for them – the journey is worth it. It a powerful message of positive reinforcement.
If they can do it, so can I.
You Share the Love.
A desire for life long learning is the gift that keeps on giving. It gives to you and allows you to give to others. One of the biggest compliments you can ever receive is when someone asks you to teach them something.
That is a sure sign that they look to you as a source of knowledge. They see you as a trusted source of information and know-how.
And that’s pretty awesome!
OK. Your turn.
I’d love to hear your ‘Love of Learning’ stories.
Feeling empowered? Discovered a new Joy? Saving some money?
Inspiring others? Sharing the love?
With gratitude, always
